‘Saw VI’ Director Announced

Saw V director David Hackl announced that Kevin Greutert will helm Saw VI, which is expected for October of 2009, off a script from Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton. This will mark Greutert’s directorial debut, but he has served as editor on the entire Saw series so far. Saw V hits theaters on October 24th.

‘Dawn of the Dead’ in 3D, Sequel Planned

Richard Rubinstein revealed that a 3D version of George A. Romero’s 1978 zombie classic Dawn of the Dead is in the works. He told Fangoria that the film “can be reformatted into 3D without any editing, and the image looks spectacular! As it stands now, it will take about a year to complete the conversion of the whole film.” In-Three, Inc., who has worked with the likes of Peter Jackson, James Cameron, and more, will be responsible for the process. Rubinstein served as producer on Dawn as well as its 2004 remake and many Romero films. He also let it slip that he plans to create a direct sequel to the original Dawn. No other information was revealed, but we’ll keep you updated.

Master P and Son to Meet ‘Pig People’

Rap mogul Master P and his son, Lil’ Romeo, will be starring in The Pig People, according to Variety. Daeg Faerch (Halloween remake) and his mother, Mickey Faerch, also have roles.  Sounds like fun for the whole family. The slasher follows five college students into a forest haunted by half-swine, half-human creatures. The picture is currently lensing and can be expected sometime next year.

Possible ‘Elm Street’ Remake Writers

Platinum Dunes are reportedly interested in getting Damian Shannon and Mark Swift to write the upcoming remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, according to Bloody Disgusting. The duo already scripted their Friday the 13th remake, due out next February, as well as 2003’s Freddy vs Jason. I thought FvJ was a lot of fun, but it wasn’t that great of a picture; I’ll have to see the Friday remake before making a good judgment. Look for Freddy Krueger to return to your nightmares in the future. In the mean time we’ll keep you updated on the scribe situation.

DVD Day: ‘Amateur Porn Star Killer 2,’ ‘Frontier(s)’

This week the only horror we’re getting is direct to video, but there are some great ones to be found. First up is Amateur Porn Star Killer 2, an independent, pseudo-snuff flick. You can read our review of this sequel that ups the ante here. Also out is Frontier(s), an impressive and gory French film; Timber Falls, a backwoods flick with a religious twist; The Cottage, a clever, British thriller; and Botched, a horror comedy starring Stephen Dorff.

Henkel to Return to ‘Texas’ with Leatherface

Kim Henkel, who co-wrote The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with director Tobe Hooper, is ready to bring Leatherface back in his own way. The filmmaker tells Fangoria that he recently completed the first draft of a script for a new film in the franchise. Interestingly enough, he says that Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes (who released the recent remake and prequel, which Henkel co-produced) won’t be involved. This back-to-the-roots film sounds like great news on the surface, until you think about Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, the awful 1994 sequel that Henkel wrote and directed. With one classic and one abomination under his belt, there’s no telling where this project will go. We’ll keep out fingers crossed though, as Henkel said that this is “the first time since the original that I’ve done something that I wanted to do with it.”

Verbinksi to Deliver ‘Bioshock’

If you’re a gamer, you may have heard of a little game called Bioshock. Released to much critical acclaim and commercial success in 2006 on the Xbox 360 (and later on the PC), Bioshock will be brought to the big screen by director Gore Verbinski (The Ring, Pirates of the Caribbean series), according to Variety. Universal will release the film, which will be scripted by John Logan (Sweeney Todd, The Aviator). Verbinski stated, “I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that’s cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential. Of all the games I’ve played, this is one that I felt has a really strong narrative.”

Bousman to Direct ‘Hellraiser’ Remake?

Bloody Disgusting broke the news that Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III, IV), perhaps the most wanted horror director at this moment, is being heavily courted by the Weinsteins to direct the Hellraiser remake, but Bousman is denying the reports. As we reported before, French directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury (Inside) are off the project. Horror screenwriters extraordinaire Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (Feast, Saw IV) are delivering the script. What can be said? In Hollywood, when you’re hot, you’re hot… and apparently you can write or direct all the horror films released by studios in a year.

‘The Descent 2′ is Underway

After raking in $57 million dollars worldwide, Neil Marshall’s The Descent will get a sequel bankrolled by Celador, according to Hollywood Reporter. The bad news is that Marshall won’t be directing, but instead he will be producing. Jon Harris, who worked as editor on the original, will make his directorial debut, with a script from James Watkins (My Little Eye). Stars Shauna Macdonald and Natalie Mendoza will return. Filming is taking place in Scotland and London with a $10 million budget. I thought The Descent was the best horror film of 2006 (originally released overseas in 2005, but still). And isn’t our new Descent header awesome?
