DVD Day: ‘Beetlejuice,’ ‘Death Note,’ ‘Beyond the Door’
Kicking things off this week is a trio of old favorites: Beetlejuice, a 20th anniversary edition of the 1988 Tim Burton classic; Beyond the Door, a 1974 Italian rip off of The Exorcist; and Class of 1999, a 1990 pseudo-sequel to Class of 1984 about robot teachers. Also hitting shelves today is Death Note, a Japanese film about a man ridding the world of criminals with notebook containing the power to kill; They Wait, a inspired by true events about a mother, played by Jamie King (Sin City), trying to save her son from ancient Chinese spirits; The Legend of Bloody Mary, a new telling of the old urban legend; and Never Cry Werewolf, a Sci Fi Channel lycanthrope picture.
Fox is also releasing three Goosebumps movies: Monster Blood, about a boy who comes across the slimy, green, titular substance; A Night in Terror Tower, about a pair of kids who travel back to the 15th century; and One Day in Horrorland, about a family at a haunted amusement park. In addition to Beetlejuice getting a Blu-ray treatment, The Mist (review) and 1408 (review), two Stephen King adaptations for last year, are getting the upgrade.
Flick Pick: Although all three of the re-releases that kicked the post off are worth checking out, my pick of the week has to go to Beetlejuice. It scared me as a kid but now I find it to be a lot of fun. It’s one of those movies that you want to watch whenever you hear it mentioned, so I’m definitely going to be checking out the new edition.
