Rhode Island Horror Film Fest 2008 Event Report

The ninth annual Rhode Island International Horror Film Festival, an off-shoot of the Rhode Island International Film Festival, took place last month, and H101 was on hand to cover many of the films screened. Over the course of four days, I had the pleasure of seeing eighteen shorts and nine features. Although some movies were better than others and my behind was quite sore after the weekend’s close, I’m happy to report that I wouldn’t consider any of the films screened to be bad. In addition to all the movies, there was also a walking tour of legendary author and RI native H.P. Lovecraft’s favorite locales; Malice Aforethought, in which performers sang classic operatic songs and recited poetry to a backdrop of classic silent films; and a speaking and book signing with Inside a Haunted Mind author K. Patrick Malone.

Here are my superlatives of the festival:

Best Feature Film: Trailer Park of Terror
Runner Up: Nightlife
Honorable Mention: Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story

Best Short Film: 1200 AM
Runner Up: Kirksdale
Honorable Mention: The Call of Cthulu

Scariest Film: Conjurer
Bloodiest Film: Snip
Funniest Film: Nightlife

Be sure to check out all of our coverage:
- Short film reviews (part one)
- Short film reviews (part two)
- Feature film reviews
- Trailer Park of Terror review
- Photos from the festival

I encourage anyone with the means of getting there to check out this festival when it rolls around next October. It’s a great way to get exposed to wonderful indie films that may otherwise fall under the radar.  Kudos to the RIIHFF’s organizers for putting together such a fun experience for us horror fans.
