New ‘Friday’ Sets Box Office Records

Valentine’s Day weekend proved to be a great holiday for horror fans, as the new Friday the 13th reboot opened to box office success. Marcus Nispel’s film opened at number 1 with a record setting $45.2 million for the four-day weekend. Jason Vorhees’ anticipated return to the big screen is also the biggest opening for a horror remake and for a slasher film, even outgrossing 2007’s record-breaking Halloween. The folks at Platinum Dunes must be very happy this morning. With these figures, a sequel is guaranteed. You can read our review of the new Friday here, and a roundtable discussion of the weaknesses and strengths of the film will be posted in the next couple of days.
