Indie Scene: ‘The Hood Has Eyez’ Pushes Envelope

Rape/revenge flick is genuinely uncomfortable to watch

written and directed by Terrence Williams

Upon hearing of The Hood Has Eyez I was expecting some urban version of The Hill Has Eyes with black inbreds in the ghetto. Sure, that could have been fun, but what I got was much better… or worse, depending on your perspective. The only real commonality is the title; the film itself is a rape/revenge flick in vein of 1978’s I Spit on Your Grave. Kimmy (Cyd Schulte), Susan (Jesselynn Desmond), Rachel (Jamielyn Kane), and Jerry (Tom Curitore), a group of preppy teens (the three females in skimpy school girl outfits, of course), decide to cut class for a day of partying, but they soon run into some trouble when they hit a girl with their car. The chick, Shy Girl (Anne Stinnett), is actually a decoy for Joker (Carlos Castillo) and Psycho (Antonio Royuela), a couple of Mexican gangsters who plan to rob the teens. Things get out of hand when people start getting raped and killed, but the hunters becomes the hunted when one of the victims survives and seeks revenge.

I hate to give death spoilers in a review because it’s usually more effective to see it without expectations, but I’m confident that any exploitation fans out there will only want to see this more when they find out what’s in store. This flick has it all: anal raping, used tampon sucking, golden showering, dirty sanchez giving, broken glass penetrating, penis castrating, fetus aborting, and more. Sure, the acting is bad and the effects are lame, but the film is effective in that you want to keep watching to see what they’ll do next and just how far they’ll go. It has an undeniable grindhouse feel with its grainy quality and other shortcomings only adding to the experience. There are some unintentionally funny moments, but there are also a few scenes that are genuinely uncomfortable to watch.

The extras on the DVD are rather boring: over 15 minutes of behind the scenes footage shot on set, bloopers, and a slideshow. I typically have more to say in a review, but I believe that anyone reading this will have already made up their mind. The Hood Has Eyez is seventy-three minutes of twisted torture from the sick mind of director/writer Terrence Williams. While not a film I’d want to watch over and over, it’s well done for what it is: offensive, disgusting, brutal, perverse, and shocking. Those easily offended need not apply, but fans of the glory days of exploitation flicks are bound to enjoy this throwback to the ’70’s.

Horror 101 gives The Hood Has Eyez a 66 out of 101
