Horror-101

Rhode Island Horror Film Fest 2009 Event Report

The ninth annual Rhode Island International Horror Film Festival took place last month, and H101 was on hand to cover many of the films screened. Over the course of a weekend, I had the pleasure of seeing eighteen shorts and four features. Fewer features were shown this year, but that is not indicative of the quality of films screened. The fest once again proved to be a great exposure to some fine independent filmmakers to look out for in the future. In addition to the movies, there was also a walking tour of legendary author and RI native H.P. Lovecraft’s favorite locale and a book signing with Ghost Ships of New England author Christopher Rondina. With the historic Columbus Theater is under renovation, the quaint Bell Street Chapel graciously provided an intimate setting for the screenings.

Here are my superlatives of the festival:

Best Feature Film: Circuit
Runner Up: Cornered
Honorable Mention: Dawning

Best Short Film: The Taxidermist
Runner Up: First Kill
Honorable Mention: Mr. Wire’s Nostalgia

Best Direction: Peach Farm (The Veil)
Best Screenplay: First Kill
Best Cinematography: Danse Macabre

Scariest Film: Dawning
Goriest Film: Maggots
Funniest Film: Werewolf Trouble

The fest’s official winners can be found here. Everyone who can should check out this film fest; it’s great way to gain exposed to wonderful indie films that may otherwise fall under the radar. Kudos to the RIIHFF’s organizers for putting together such a great opportunity for genre fans.
