‘Mist’ Interviews: Frank Darabont and Stephen King
With The Mist now in theaters, we bring to your attention two very fascinating interviews. The first is a 2-hour podcast interview with director Frank Darabont, conducted by the folks at KSPR-Perspective Radio (thanks to Renato Aguirre for bringing this to our attention) in which he talks about his twenty-plus years experiences in screenwriting for Hollywood, his admiration for the work of Sidney Lumet and Steven Spielberg (”Spielberg’s the best!”), and his long-in-the-making adaptation of The Mist. He even mentions his dejected script for Indiana Jones IV as the challenge of “pleasing two masters” (Spielberg liked the script; George Lucas didn’t).
Darabont has been wanting to adapt The Mist since 1994, before he even did The Shawshank Redemption. He refers to the merely 17-million-budgeted film as ‘more potent and relevant now than it would have been ten years ago’. He states that he prefers an absence of style as a director, that making The Mist was akin to playing in an improvisational jazz trio, and that, partly, his motivation in making it was to “take off the nice guy hat, flip humanity the finger and tell people, ‘here’s how you guys are blowing it!’” There’s way more to check out in the full interview.
On the other end of the internet, Time Magazine online recently printed a Q&A with Stephen King. Candidly, King rhapsodizes on the media’s obsession with Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan (”Britney’s now famous for being famous… Nobody cares about her music anymore… [the public] cares whether or not she’s wearing panties.”) He also mentions his forthcoming musical play, which he co-wrote and is even co-starring in with John Mellencamp, called Ghost Brothers of Darkland County. Lastly, he touches upon his adapted Mist and commends Frank Darabont for doing a good job. He also lets it slip that Darabont has the rights to King’s The Monkey and would also like to do The Long Walk, one of King’s Bachman books. King refers to Long Walk as “so downbeat, it makes The Mist look like Young Frankenstein.”
The two interesting interviews are connected to one of our highest-rated reviews of the year. Check them out!
